◆Title Ethnography of Education and Gender in rural Ethiopia
◆Abstract
This presentation is based on my ethnography “Education and Gender in rural Ethiopia,” published in February 2025. It will discuss how women of the Maale, an ethnic minority living in southwest Ethiopia, value their own lives in a patriarchal society. It will also examine how women’s ways of life relates to the spread of schooling. Despite the understanding that marriage and childbirth have traditionally been considered factors that discourage girls’ education within the development framework, not only school-aged children but also married women who had not previously had access to education are now attending school in Maale. In this presentation, I will focus on the life stories of women in difficult educational situations and analyze the interpretations of the meanings they give to their schooling. I will also examine how these interpretations are reflected in the social positioning of women and how they relate to women’s autonomy.
